John William Mathewson, M.D.
Board Certified Hand Surgeon
Dr. John Mathewson was born and raised in England. During his academic years, he graduated in the top five percent of his class, and was inducted into the International Honor Society. He did his residency in general surgery at York Hospital and pursued a fellowship in hand and microsurgery. Dr. Mathewson trained at the Mayo Clinic in advanced microsurgical techniques. He is Board Certified in Hand Surgery.
Dr. Mathewson excels in all minimally invasive hand, wrist and elbow procedures, carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel release, fractures including dislocations , wrist arthroscopy, De Quervain’s release and sports injuries . In his experience, Dr. Mathewson has also served as a team physician for three local soccer clubs in San Antonio. He prides himself in his approachable, competent and holistic approach to patient care.
When Dr. Mathewson is not at the clinic, he loves being active outdoors such as playing soccer, skiing and scuba diving. He also enjoys traveling and spending time with his family. He agrees with the motto, “Bigger in Texas,” with the exception of surgical incisions. Fun fact about Dr. Mathewson: before medical school, he taught skiing in Austria and Germany, and was part of the Mountain Rescue team.
